Livingston County, once the greatest corn producing county in the state, was founded in 1837. It was formed from parts of McLean,
LaSalle and Iroquois counties, and named after Edward Livingston, a prominent politician.

Livingston was the mayor of New York City, represented New York in the United States House of Representatives, and then represented Louisiana in both houses of Congress. He was also Andrew Jackson's secretary of state, and the United States minister to France.

Although he had no connections to Illinois, the General Assembly found him accomplished enough to name a county after him.

During the Indian Wars at the turn of the 19th century, all the area settlers fled except for Orville Oliver. He was well respected by the peaceful Kickapoo Indians who had a large village south of Chatsworth. Only when President Jackson created the famous "Trail of Tears" did settlers return to the area.

Chatsworth was also a hub of activity at the railroad crossings of the Illinois Central and the Toledo, and the Peoria and Western Railroads. It also has the dubious honor of being the location of what is still the worst train wreck in Illinois history, the Niagara Excursion disaster of 1887.
